YouTube is the second largest search engine behind Google and over 35 hours of video is uploaded to this site every minute….yes I said every minute! Add to that 2 billion video views per day, and it is difficult to argue against incorporating YouTube video marketing into your online marketing strategy. But with that many uploads, how will you ever get found on You Tube? Here is my five step guide on how to make a good YouTube video that will get ranked!
But the value in YouTube videos lies not only in being found on YouTube itself….Google also ranks relevant videos in it’s search results, and therein lies the true power of YouTube videos. In fact it can be easier to get ranked on page one of Google with a video than with a website!
Not only is a listing on page one of Google more than achievable, but add to that the fact that your YouTube video listing will stand out against the competion with it’s attached image. The advent of authorship markup is possibly going to diminish this advantage, but that’s a topic for another day. In any case, a ranking on page one of Google is always going to bring you traffic.
So, Here Is My 5 Step Guide On How To Make A Good YouTube Video….
1. Decide On Your Topic
Start by uncovering exactly what people are looking for. If you are stuck for ideas, check out what people are talking about on Facebook, Twitter, other Social Media sites or news sites for inspiration. Or find the most watched You Tube videos in your category for the day by clicking on ‘browse’. ‘How to…’ videos will usually do well if they are on topic.
2. Do Your Keyword Research
Having decided on a topic, go and do your keyword research. Google Keyword Tool is a free tool that will help you find keywords that you have a good chance of ranking for, or you can of course use one of the many paid tools, such as Market Samurai, MicroNicheFinder or SECockpit.
2. Content
The value of a video is in the content, not the production. Make sure your content delivers on what the title promises and remember your video does not need to look like it has been professionally crafted or be overly slick. In fact, people on YouTube respond better to real people than they do polished professional performances.
3. Crafting Your Video
Having said that, here are some tips on how to create videos that people will want to watch.
1. First of all your content should be either entertaining, educational or enlightening …it needs to be engaging and hold people’s attention.
2. Keep your videos short...2-3 minutes is a good length, unless it is a tutorial, in which case it can be much longer.
3. Edit your videos…the more the better. Each time you ‘cut’ the video, you re-engage your viewers, thus lengthening their attention span.
4. Add music
5. Give your viewers something to look at other than just your shoulder/face shot…walk around or add photos or a slideshow, or include a screenshare if appropriate.
6. Be engaging. Talk to your viewers, not down to them…in other words talk to them at the same level and ask them for comments or their opinions, or ask them what type of content they would like from you.
7. Add a call to action overlay over the video….this looks like this….
9. Animoto is a great tool for creating all kinds of videos, that can include slides, photos and short video clips. You can add music or voice and Animoto will do the rest.
4. How To Structure Your video
Having decided on your content, now is the time to structure your video. You only have a very short amount of time to capture your viewers’ attention, so the first few seconds of your video are crucial. If you fluff the opening, no-one will ever get as far as your content. Your video should be structured in three distinct parts…
- An introduction or video trailer, which should introduce the content of your video…ie what your video is going to be about and tell your viewers why they need to keep watching.
- The content you promised in your introduction
- Your call to action which could be as simple as a request to ‘like’ your video or leave a comment, or you could direct them to a particular website.
5. Getting Your Videos Ranked
The following list is far from complete, but here are some things you can do to get your videos ranked….
1. Description Box: The first item in your description box should be the website you are trying to drive traffic to. This could be your blog or a sales page. After that, write a short and accurate description about your video’s content and, most importantly, include your keyword.
2. Add backlinks to your video. That is to say have other relevant sites linking to your video. You can start with your own blog or site. But article directories, such as Ezines can also provide useful backlinks. If you prefer to get someone else to do the backlinking work for you, go to http://fiverr.com. But make sure they are going to provide natural looking quality backlinks.
3. Get backlinks and comments on your Channel (as opposed to your video). These will help with the ranking of all of your videos across the board.
4. Get some dialog going in the comments of your video. Ask your viewers for comments or set up a small syndicating group that will comment on each other’s videos. Make sure you respond to comments.
5. Get a few video responses to your videos. Ask clients to give video testimonials or set up a reciprocal agreement with fellow online marketers to help each other out.
Your Next Step…
This 5 step guide should get you started with your video marketing, but if you really want to take it seriously and learn all the ins and outs of how to make a good YouTube video and more importantly, how to get it ranked in both YouTube and Google, then I highly recommend Lewis Howes’ and James Wedmore’s ‘Video Traffic Academy‘.
This course will guide you step by step through all that you need to know for successful video marketing. Lewis and James share some valuable free lessons in their video on their sales page, such as the three biggest mistakes people make with their YouTube marketing and they introduce their 3 Step System. Hi Louise
Another great post by you. I do not think enough people understand the power of video and if they do they do not understand the SEO that goes with it.
I recently went to an internet marketers evening on the Sunshine Coast where there was a speaker on YouTube marketing. There were people in the audience who had no idea videos could be be found via Google.
Like you I also love video email.
I am thinking i have to buy the Video Traffic Academy course. It looks awesome and such good value.

Hello Louise,
You have such a nice post. Do you consider the visual and audio quality important too?
I like watching a video that is good for my eyes and also clear and soothing to my ears. First time here and I think I can find useful marketing tips here on your blog.
Bob
Thank you Bob. Although the content of a video is the most important factor, I would agree with you that the quality of the audio needs to be good enough to make for pleasant and easy listening and your visuals need to be both relevant and legible.

Thanks for this very informative article Louise. I’m (finally!) starting to get active on YouTube, but it’s been fun and with each new video I learn something new. Haven’t even given thought to marketing them yet so I’ve been very plesantly surprised with how my subscription list has taken on a life of it’s own. I’m up to my eyeballs with a book launch this week, but then look forward to working on my next video and trying new things. I’m also very interested in the course you mentioned above. Thanks!

Thanks Kevin….yes, if the content is not good, then no one is going to watch your videos…it’s as simple as that. My most successful video to date starts with a sniff and the audio quality is not great. I’m quite embarrassed about it, but the content is good, so it has still had lots of views.

Hi Louise, what a great post! I definitely think the takeaway line, for me at least, is ‘The value of a video is in the content, not the production.’ You make some great points. One word of caution to ‘would-be’ video marketers: Don’t make the video intoroduction too long. Yes, people need to know what your video is about, but remember what they are really coming for -.i.e. the Information – and deliver it to them as succinctly as possible.

Thanks for a great post

I have been doing a lot of research on video marketing as of late and your post hits it on every point. YouTube is a great way to generate back links, leads, customers and more importantly a very loyal following if applied correctly. I would add that I recommend that you also syndicate your video’s to a few of the other free video sites as well. Take maximum advantage of the work that your doing to ensure the best results.
Hi Clint…thanks for your comment. And yes, I would agree with you that it is important to syndicate your video’s over other free video sites. Tube Mogul can help with this. Louise

I just have a few things to add. One of the most important ways to rank a You Tube video is to get views, and I can get you views for a couple of cents each. The other thing is, you often only have to answer a question that people are looking hard to find, even if it takes thirty seconds or less, and you can get millions of views.
Good points Rowan…thank you. Louise

Louise, this is a great post for people to get started with video. It is incredible the impact that video can have and how well they rank in searches! One thing I’ve found that also helps get your videos ranked is to upload a transcript. This helps reinforce the keywords that you input in the video settings….and I would upload an accurate transcript and not leave it up to the youtube robots to try to figure out what you are saying.
