1. Learn to LOVE FAILURE
This may sound like an odd statement, but believe it or not, it is true. Why? Well, failure is the road to success! It is only by picking our way through a minefield of failure that we can expect to find that pot of gold called success. So, the key to success is massive failure!
Let me explain. This is an analogy I recently heard in a presentation by Darren Hardy, Publisher and Editorial Director of Success Magazine. Success and failure are like a pendulum. Imagine a pendulum, with ‘success’ on one side, and ‘failure’ on the other. We associate failure with rejection, defeat, pain and sadness and we associate success with happiness, victory, joy and a sense of achievement.
We cannot force success into our lives, but we can control how many times we try. The problem with trying over and over again, is that each time we try, we are potentially setting ourselves up for failure, and it is only natural to want to avoid the negative emotions associated with failure. But if we are able to push ourselves through that failure and keep going back for more, then eventually the pendulum must swing back in the opposite direction towards success. It cannot keep swinging in one direction only. So each failure takes us one step closer to success and that is why wee need to learn to love failure, if we are going to succeed.
2. Consistency
Not only consistency, but persistence! Success is a little like pumping water by hand: It is hard to get the pump started. If nothing happens we have a tendency to give up. But if we keep pumping, eventually we will succeed in getting a few drops of water.
At this point, if we keep pumping, we will get a full flow of water and we can then pump a little more slowly and still keep the water flowing. But if instead of carrying on pumping when we only have a few drops of water, we give up because it’s all too much hard work, we will end up with no water at all and we will have to start from scratch. So consistency and persistence paid off!
So, in order to succeed, we must remain consistent, persistent and NEVER give up.
3. Success is a Formula
If we don’t know how to make a Beef Bourguignon for example, we can follow a recipe. The first time we make it, it may not taste great, but the second time we make it, it
will taste better and the third time it will taste better still. Practice makes perfect!
In order to succeed you must
- Decide what you want…..decide WHY you want it and how badly you want it
- Learn the formula
- Figure out what skills you need, such as communication skills, presentation skills, how you should dress, finding a mentor, what books or magazines to read or seminars to attend.
- Practice over and over again until you are perfect and then practice some more….
- Remember it takes time to learn a new skill. In fact, it is said that it takes 10,000 hours to master a new skill, so be patient and don’t be too hard on yourself.
Success may not always be easy, but it is always simple!

I would agree in the # 1 super secret! failures can help us to learn several things. In that case, we can easily avoid some of the mistakes we have and correct it!
