Have you ever wondered how you can improve search engine rankings for your blog posts? Most of us have heard of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), but getting our blog article listed on page one of a Google search can seem a little daunting, if not something of a mystery!
Getting into Google’s “head” and working out how it’s algorithms work is not easy and the rules are constantly evolving to combat anyone who might dare to try manipulate the system in order to get their page ranked. However, with just a few simple guidelines it is possible to improve search engine rankings and get your articles ranked on that coveted page one.
SEO is based on four major priciples
- Page Rank – Google ranks pages on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being a top ranked site. Go to Google’s free page rank checker to check out your page ranking
- On-Page Optimization
- Linking Structure and Inbound Links
- Time a site has been established
Start With Your Keyword Research
Find a keyword you want to rank for. Look for keywords that have around 1000 to 2000 searches per month and not too many competing pages. Long tail keywords, that is to say a short phrases, are more likely to fulfill this criteria. To help with your keyword research try Google free keyword tool or Micro Niche Finder.
The Heading
Google’s spiders start at the top of the page and work their way down……So, the higher up in your article your keyword appears the sooner it will be picked up. Your heading is a good place to start. Use your keyword at the beginning of the heading and repeat it a second time if you can. For example, if you are trying to rank for the key word “XYZ Company” your heading might look something like this…..”XYZ Company Review – Is XYZ Company a real business opportunity?”
Body Text
As the spiders work their way down your article, you want them to find your keyword in the first paragraph, so weave your keyword into the text once or twice. Make it as natural as possible and mix up the keyword with other words. So in our example of “XYZ Company” we could use “XYZ Company Research”, “XYZ Company Review”, “XYZ Company Products” and so on.
Always highlight the keyword throughout the article, either by underlining it or putting it in bold. Again, this will bring it to Google’s attention. Mention your keyword again from time to time in the rest of the body text, but be careful not to keyword load your entire article….Google will pick this up and it could be counter productive…..you could well be penalised for it!
Include Anchor Text Links. Google loves these, but make sure you are rotating your Anchor text and not using the same text each time, or Google will once again penalise you.
Submit Your Article To Top Ranking Sites And Create Back-Links
Your site may not have been around for that long, nor is it likely to have a top ranking. These are two things Google looks for. A simple way round this is to submit your article to various highly ranked sites. Ezine Articles, HubPages and ArticlesBase all have a ranking of 6 and Squidoo has a ranking of 8, which means Google likes these sites and your article is more likely to get ranked through one of these sites. There are hundreds of sites you can submit articles to, but these are the top four:
Google loves back-links and submitting your article to various sites also allows you to create backlinks to your original blog site . So do not forget to add these.
One final tip, when submitting your articles to the various sites, remember to change them a little, so Google does not pick up duplicate text. The changes do not need to be significant. Changing the title and a little text should suffice.
Follow the above guidelines and you will improve search engine rankings for your blog posts. But remember, SEO does not happen over night. Give it time and remember you are sowing seeds for the future. Once ranked, your site will be there for ever more, bringing traffic to your site.
If you have any tips to add to my list, I’d love to hear them……please leave a comment below!

Great write up! I have been doing this for a few months now, and have found these same techniques to be pretty effective. One thing you might want to clear up though to keep people safe, is, if you do target Melaleuca as a term, be ready for a lawsuit. Melaleuca tends to be very protective of their products, branding, and will for sure sue if you are trying to scrape customers. I’d hate to see you get someone into a legal situation (and if they heard that you suggested it to them, you may find yourself in a lawsuit too).
I haven’t had a problem with targeting Freelife, Gochi, Monavai, or Noni, however. And there are new MLM’s popping up all the time, getting in early on those can yield some great results. Last week my traffic jumped significantly with a Trump Network target.
Melaleuca’s the only one I know that actually sues for the scraping, but others may follow suit. So happy authoring, but stay clear of trouble.
Thank you Jackson for that valuable feedback. Trust me to pick the only MLM likely to sue….it was a total random pick. However, I have changed the text to an imaginary company so hopefully that will keep me and my readers out of trouble. It’s good to know you have also found these techniques to be effective. Thanks again.

Thank you Sue….yes I have also been neglectful of SEO when writing my posts, but then I realised that it really is worth the extra bit of work to get my posts onto google as they will be there for ever. Hope it all made sense, but let me know if you need anything further.
Hi Louise,
The topic of SEO can really be baffling to me. There seems to be so much to consider and take into account. Sometimes the hardest thing to come up with is a topic and good content to write about for your blog. To also have to think about SEO for the post….wee, it’s just been tough at times. Thanks for taking to the time to really spell this out for me and everyone else. I appreciate it!

Thank you Don…yes it can sometimes be challenging to come up with good content and SEO, but it is worth it in the long run….
Hey Don….I totally agree with you. SEO is quite baffling and not always easy to follow. But I have only just come to realise that there is little point in writing a post that is not SEO optimised, unless of course you are just writing for the fun of it. But I like to think that my posts will be helpful to others and they therefore need to be found…..
Hi Louise, I just recently became aware that there were things that could be done to improve search engine ranking and have been doing all I can to educate myself. I’ve learned some great things in your post and I’m sure others will find it helpful as well.. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Louise
Thanks for this, I too find it a bit baffling to write my posts to be SEO friendly and hope that just somehow I have it right. Wishful thinking won’t do it though I am sure so I will pay a little more attention to what you have written here as you make it seem so easy.

Louise,
How do you get a Google page rank if you don’t have an API key? I clicked on your link above and it stated that API keys were no longer given out.
Must admit that I’m still working on writing SEO friendly articles. You make the process seem straight forward. I’ll use your article as a reference guide to work towards higher SEO optimization.

Sorry Darlene….that was an old link. Try this one instead http://www.prchecker.info/. I will amend the article also. I have found writing SEO friendly articles quite a challenge, but now I have my system in place, it has become just a process and doesn’t take as long as it used to. There is a lot more to it and I’m still working on that, but this is definitely a good place to start. Let me know if you need anything else.
Hi Louise,
Some tips here that I hadn’t heard of yet, or used, so I will get on that. Although I do find keywords a bit tough still ( which ones to choose that are numbers that you mention but not a lot of competition.) Thanks for the reminder about the back links and the tips. I look forward to searching my keyword and finding myself on the first page of Google!! Helpful post. Thanks again! Holly

Thanks Holly and glad you found it useful. Yes, finding keywords can be something of a challenge, especially as you seem to get different information from different sources. I use Micro Niche Finder to help with my keyword research, but I find using several tools and comparing the results works best. Good luck and look forward to seeing your posts on page one very soon
Thanks for visiting my site Louise. would have been over here sooner to comment but my laptop crashed and the techies are still trying to work out what went wrong! Get a new laptop out of it but had to visit the local library so I could get on-line.
Usually respond to visitors’ comments the same day, so sorry for the delay but I will be back to explore your site when I have my new laptop.

Hi Louise
What a great SEO primer.
When I started blogging I did a lot of research into SEO and was a regular visitor to the SEOMoz site to watch Rand Fishkins videos.
I still do some reading on SEO and try to keep up to date, so this made for a refreshing reminder.

I like how you emphasized all the important details that most people take for granted. Maybe because it can really be tedious work especially if you start working on keywords. Just imagine the process that you need to perform. In the long run, it’s worth the effort and time…

Hi Louise,
You have such a great knack for breaking things down into simple to understand, digestible chunks.
Seo can be such a daunting topic, yet you’ve taken some powerful strategies and explained them in a clear and easy format.
I have to say I get totally bored with keyword research but I’m loving Google Instant as a short cut! It’s especially handy if I’m in a hurry and just want a few quick keyword search ideas for my post in a matter of seconds.
Thanks for your great tips.

little things….
Thanks for visiting my blog and your comment. I agree keyword research can be very tedious and I put off getting my head around it for some time, putting it in the too difficult category.
The Google Instant tool is a great tool for quick keyword research – thanks for that reminder.
Louise
PS I’m very proud of myself – I just worked out how to put an acute accent on the ‘e’ at the end of your name
Here mentioned SEO tips are great. I am submitting my article at Knol.google.com. It is Google’s article sharing site.
Brilliant post as always Louise! I really saw an improvement when I started using long-tail keywords, they really work as well as the articles say. Google checks everything on your site and there are so many things contributing to the ranking of your page, it would be wise to know all of them and make the proper adjustments.
